Tim Smith

He is married, a father, a grandfather, and enjoys the
great outdoors. Tim loves calling North Carolina home.

Tim is a world class, internationally renowned fiddler. He has worked and recorded with many internationally and locally known artists in his career including Bill Monroe and his Bluegrass Boys, Lester Flatt, Del McCoury, The Country Gentlemen, Tony Rice, Terry Baucom, Alan Bibey, Don Helms, The Bluegrass Cardinals, Zeke Saunders, L.W. Lambert & The Blue River Boys, Malpass Brothers, The Churchmen and many others.
Tim was born on May 29th, 1955 in Havre de Grace, Maryland. Tim started playing the fiddle at around age 7, playing fiddle tunes with his father, brother Ronnie, grandfather Kilby Reeves and uncles, Tom and Bert Reeves. Tim studied and played classical music in Maryland school orchestras from ages 9 to 13. His mother and father were always encouraging and supportive of his musical adventures and aspirations.

The family moved to Sparta, NC, where his mom and dad were born and raised, in 1968. Tim quickly got acquainted and played music with quite a few of the local musicians in Sparta, and in surrounding areas of the state of North Carolina. He was invited to compete with various bands in area fiddler conventions.
One fiddle contest, in particular, that Tim won in 1973, shortly after his graduation from Alleghany High School in Sparta, NC, was very memorable and important. It was Lester Flatt’s fiddle contest, held during his summer Bluegrass festival in Pinnacle, NC. The first prize award was the opportunity to perform, as a guest with Lester Flatt and The Nashville Grass on The Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, TN, which Tim did in late winter of 1974. That great honor afforded him many professional music opportunities.

Other notable accomplishments include; the “first place fiddle prize at 1976 NC State Championship Fiddler’s Convention”, the “first place fiddle prize at 1977 Galax Fiddler’s Convention”, and the “1978 World Championship fiddle prize at Union Grove Fiddler’s Convention”.
